FEATURED SETTLEMENT: Facing a potential $3.5M verdict, Santa Fe Importers/Marisa Foods settles for $285,000.

Mauricio Ludicha v. Santa Fe Importers Inc. (BC592078), Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles: In 2015, Long Beach meat wholesaler, Santa Fe Importers/Marisa Foods was the target of a class action lawsuit by former employees. The employees claimed violations of California meal and rest break laws. The plaintiffs amended their complaint to add certain provisions authorized by California’s 2004 Private Attorney’s General Act, which allows for increased penalties for labor code violations. In their case, they were facing up to $3.5M in penalties. Rather than risk the entire business with a substantial verdict at trial, Santa Fe Importers decided it had no choice but to settle the case for $285,000.

Plaintiff was represented by Nourmand Michael, Esq. Defendants were represented by Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP.
