EFFECT OF COVID-19 ON CALIFORNIA COURTS

|

On March 23, 2020, California’s Chief Justice, Hon. Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, issued a statewide order suspending and continuing all jury trials for 60 days, or until May 22, 2020. She further authorized the superior courts to adopt any rules intended to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to take effect immediately, making it easier for each county to formulate its own rules to address the current situation.

This order follows on the heels of a statewide Executive Order issued by California Governor Gavin Newsom on March 19, 2020, which directed all non-essential businesses to send their workers home.

Below is a summary of the status of some California superior court jurisdictions in addition to federal court. The below information is subject to change as the various courts continue to issue new orders.
