Apple Agrees to $50 Million Settlement over Faulty Keyboards

Product Liability

In re: MacBook Keyboard Litigation (USDC Northern District No. 5:18-cv-02813-EJD): On December 2, 2022 Apple Inc. agreed to the terms of a $50 million settlement to resolve a class action law suit filed against in them in regards to fault keyboards on their popular MacBook series of laptops. Members of the class alleged that the “butterfly” keyboards in models manufactured after 2015 suffered from a high failure rate due to their defective design that would require a full keyboard replacement if the keys became dirty. Plaintiffs alleged that they were induced to purchase the laptops based on Apple’s representations that they keyboards were highly responsive and premium in design. Plaintiffs further contended that the laptops were unable to be used due to a failure of a central function, and that Apple knew of the defect and knowingly concealed this defect. Defendant denied wrongdoing and liability and ultimately agreed to the terms of a $50 million settlement, without any admission of fault.
