California Leaves of Absence

California has various laws concerning leaves of absence. Two of the most recent include the Supplemental Paid Sick Leave (SPSL) law and the Baby Bonding leave. The SPSL requires employers with 26 or more employees to provide 80 hours of supplemental sick leave for COVID-related issues. With the Baby Bonding Leave, employers with 5 or more employees must allow workers 12 weeks of job-protected leave to bond with the newborn or adopted or foster child. Attorney Brian Koegle recommends that when an employee requests leave, the employer maintain good documentation and engage with the employee at the beginning, middle, and end of the process.
