Google Agrees to Pay $68m in Invasion of Privacy Case

In re: Google Assistant Privacy Litigation (USDC Northern Dist. Case No. 5:19-cv-04286-BLF): On April 16, 2026, Google LLC and Alphabet Inc. agreed to the terms of a $68,000,000 settlement to resolve the claims brought forth by plaintiffs alleging Google’s “Google Assistant Feature” could illegally activate and record communications even when it was not intentionally triggered. Plaintiffs argued that the way in which this application performed was a violation of the California Invasion of Privacy Act and also violated the federal Wiretap Act. After attending multiple settlement conferences and private mediation, the parties agreed to resolve the matter with Goole admitting no wrongdoing while agreeing to pay $68 million.
