City of Los Angeles Hit With $35 Million Verdict in Dangerous Condition of Public Property Case

Arman Burmayan v. City of Los Angeles, et al. (Los Angeles Super Ct No. 21STCV29583): On May 15, 2026 a jury awarded a verdict of $35 million to plaintiff Arman Burmayan, a motorcyclist who suffered a traumatic brain injury after a collision in Granada Hills. The crash occurred at the intersection of Rinaldi and Amestoy, when defendant Mark Hollister made a left turn in front of the motorcycle being driven by plaintiff. Plaintiff alleged that the intersection in question lacked adequate sight distances for motorists making turns due to the number of vehicles allowed to parallel park at the intersection, which constituted an obstruction to other drivers. Defendant argued that there had been only 1 other accident reported at that intersection over the past years, and that they had received no complaints regarding a dangerous condition of public property at the intersection in question. After one and a half days of deliberation, the jury appointed 15 percent responsibility to the city, 45 percent to Mark Hollister and 40 percent to plaintiff.
