Renter Secures $8.5 Million Verdict Against Landlord After TBI Injury
Lakecia Briggs, et al. v. Warner Center Summit, Ltd. (Los Angeles Super Ct. No. 19STCV22896): On April 18, 2025 a jury issued a verdict of $8.5 Million in favor of renter Lakecia Briggs and against defendant Warner Center Summit arising out of an underlying premises liability claim. Plaintiff Lakecia Briggs was the occupant of a townhome that she rented from defendant, and was injured when the dropped ceiling tiles fell on her head, causing a mild traumatic brain injury. Plaintiff claimed that a leaky AC unit caused degradation to occur in the ceiling tile assembly, and that improper construction also contributed to the eventual collapse of the tile structure. Defendant denied all contentions, arguing that plaintiff was responsible for the collapse, theorizing that plaintiff hit the tile grid with a curling iron. After 4 hours of deliberation, a jury rendered a verdict of $8.5 million in favor of plaintiff. Plaintiff was represented by the Wilshire Law Firm. Defendant was represented by Murchison & Cumming.
