FEATURED VERDICT: Product Liability: $5 Million Awarded to Consumer After Suffering 2nd Degree Burns Caused by Pressure Cooker
Precious King v. Maxi-Matic U.S.A. Inc. (Calif Super Ct. Los Angeles Cty. No. BC637685): On Oct 22, 1018 a jury awarded Plaintiff Precious King recovered more than $5 million agsinst defendant Maxi-Matic, a manufacturer of a pressure cooker known as the “Elite Bistro”. Plaintiff contended that while cooking a pot roast dinner in her pressure cooker, it began to make a strange sound which prompted her to unplug the pressure cooker, which resulted in it violently exploding and causing 2nd degree burns to her face, chest and arms. Defendants admitted liability and offered $350,000 via a 998 Statutory Offer to Compromise prior to the conclusion of trial, but were ultimately responsible for over $5 million in compensation after the jury rendered their verdict.
