Featured Transportation Verdict: $18.7M Awarded to Family of Surgeon Killed by Bus While Riding Bicycle

Khiabani v. Motor Coach Industries, Inc., et al. (Las Vegas, 8th District Ct., No. A-17-755-977-C): On March 23, 2018 a jury reached an $18.7 million verdict on behalf of the family of Kavyan Khiabani and against defendant Motor Coach Industries, Inc. Khiabani, while riding a bicycle, was drawn underneath and crushed by a 2008 MCI tour bus. Plaintiffs alleged that the aerodynamic design of the tour bus created a pulling force of 20 pounds near the right front portion of the bus, and that MCI should have known that such a design posed a risk to cyclists such as decedent. Defendant put on expert testimony by accident reconstruction experts to counter plaintiffs’ claim. Plaintiffs were represented by Christiansen Law Offices. Defendant was represented by Hartline Dacus Barger Dreyer LLP and Weinberg Wheeler Hudgins Gunn & Dial LLC.
