FEATURED SETTLEMENT: $8.4 Million Settlement in Wage and Hour Lawsuit
Case No. 2015-CV-284784 – Thomas Lagos, et al. v. The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University
In 2015, Thomas Lagos filed a class action lawsuit against the Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University. In his complaint, Mr. Lagos alleged that the University violated California labor laws by failing to pay workers for wages owed, failing to provide itemized wage statements, and violations of meal and rest period requirements. Mr. Lagos sought recovery of unpaid compensation and civil penalties pursuant to the California Private Attorney General Act.
The University denied all wrong doing in the case arguing that it has always complied with all California labor laws. In its order approving the settlement, the court made it clear that it was not clear that the Plaintiffs could recover anything close to what they alleged. Ultimately, however, when faced with mandatory penalties and litigation costs the University decided it was far less expensive to settle the lawsuit at $8.4 Million rather than take the risk with litigation.
